Two days aft Alex Pretti was murdered by national ICE agents successful Minneapolis, connected January 24, 2026, we published a “Letter From Minnesota” from the writer Dobby Gibson. As I wrote astatine the time of the national government’s convulsive concern of the Twin Cities:
Children and their families person been separated, schools person been targeted, and 2 US citizens—Renee Good and Alex Pretti—have been murdered successful the street. Over the adjacent fewer weeks we’ll beryllium publishing letters from Minnesotans—novelists, journalists, poets, memoirists—that they mightiness stock their experiences, arsenic some witnesser and warning, of American authoritarianism.
That archetypal missive turned into forty-four, successful a series that would tally until February 20. These letters person present been collected—along with a twelve caller contributions—in American Occupation, an anthology to beryllium published by the University of Minnesota Press connected January 26, 2027, edited by myself and Twin Cities writer Su Hwang. We’re precise arrogant to uncover the cover, below, designed by Jeff Clark.
As the property merchandise notes:
American Occupation documents an bonzer outpouring of literate witnesser portion the representation and consequences of Operation Metro Surge proceed to reverberate successful communities crossed the country. More than a grounds of a azygous moment, American Occupation places Operation Metro Surge successful speech with the longer past of American expansion, imperialism, borders, and the US government’s maltreatment of powerfulness against its ain civilians. The postulation asks readers to see what happens erstwhile the machinery of concern turns inward, and what forms of absorption go imaginable erstwhile mean radical garbage to judge panic arsenic normal.
